| "To the students and/or prospective students of Joe Sherwood:
This is the first personal endorsement I have given a martial arts teacher in my 35 year career. I am giving it to Joe Sherwood because he has, in every instance where we have worked together, exhibited the most extraordinary attitude. He is the kind of fellow who, as a matter of policy, goes above and beyond the call of duty –and he carries himself with humility and humor, two wonderful and endearing traits.
"If you have chance to study with Sensei Joe, do it. I know, from personal observation, that he takes his practice very seriously, but I wouldn't study with him simply for his martial arts skills; I would encourage you to take classes with Joe Sherwood because he is an honest and hardworking human being, willing to serve, and quick with a smile." |
| Jo-Anne Johnson DMD | | "I feel so fortunate to have found MLK. My daughters have been coming here for almost 5 years now and still loving it! I love that they are exercising while learning valuable self defense techniques, but to me, more important than the martial arts is the emphasis that is placed on character development and community service. The philosophy of this dojo is so powerful- they really are trying to help mold good human beings. The teachers are experienced, caring and very interested in making every class enjoyable for the kids. I look forward to many more years of watching my daughters, and the other children in their class, continue to grow and learn in this very positive environment." |
| Michael and Jean Ursitti, Manchester NH | | "We would recommend MLK to any parent looking for a martial arts studio for their children. More than just Self Defense, the MLKSDA curriculum promotes and re-enforces the same lessons and values that we teach at home. Sensei Sherwood is genuinely a caring person who lives what he teaches, and is very much a positive role model for both of our children." |
| Bob and Sandra, Grandparents | | We enjoy bringing our grandsons to MLK because it is a very friendly atmosphere. It teaches the boys to be good citizens as well as learning physical skills and staying in good physical condition. MLK encourages the boys to think as well as physical aspects of it all. |
| Lydia, Grandmother | | I like coming here to MLK Self Defense Academy to meet other parents and it is comfortable. I like bringing the children here for the discipline and learning how to be in control. The kids like coming here also. The kids have come a long way since they have been students here. They have grown in a lot of ways. |
| Jack Lavoie | | MLK Self Defense Academy is more than just an activity for my two daughters. It is part of their lives. “Sensei” and his staff are competent, knowledgeable, caring and great role models. MLK is a great mix of fitness, discipline, team building and fun. I believe that Joe and Denise (owners) are among the finest people I have met. I am glad we found MLK and would recommend it to anyone. |
| Marissa – age 8, training 4 yrs. | | I have been a student here for four years. I have learned self discipline and self defense. I like coming here because I have made many friends and like the exercise. |
| Alyssa – 17, training 7 yrs. | | Why do I keep coming and what is my motivation?
My motivation in coming to train is not the kicking and punching. It’s being able to watch myself change physically and mentally. I have grown more self confidence, self control and more aware. The other reason is to watch others grow. The kids I teach being able to help than have more confidence, control and awareness. It is such a gift to have started this journal on the road to becoming a better person. The road to my black belt.

| Megan – 17, training 7 yrs. | | I like coming here because I finally have friends and people I can trust. I am somewhere that I truly believe I belong. I always feel accepted here. |
| Costa – 14, training 3 years. | | MLK is an incredible school. When most people think of a place where kids learn how to punch and kick MLK teaches character rather than fighting. Don’t get me wrong we still have the best self defense around but we focus more on focus, teamwork and control. I started taking karate at a different school but when I saw the instructor yelling at the students I was disappointed. Our head instructor is the kindest man I have ever met. His happy disposition is only matched by his skill at martial arts and his skills at teaching. I have been at MLK for about 3 years now and I have loved every minute of it. |
| Erin at the New Hampshire Food Bank | | Dear Joe, Though this winter promises to be one of the most difficult we can remember at the New Hampshire Food Banks, our donors astonish us on a daily basis with your generosity and true freindship. We can't thank you enough for hostng a food drive at the MLK Self Defense Academy this holiday season. The 165 pounds of food you collected helped the Food Bank distribute more than 5.8 million pounds of food by the end of 2009. Please pass along our sincere thanks to all who participated in the wonderful drive, and thank you for supporting the Food Bank this season. All the best, Erin |
